It is important to inform your dermatology provider of any medical conditions you may have along with any medications you may be taking.

This medication has an expiration or beyond use date. Do not use this medication after the date listed on the bottle.

If you are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant, do not use Hair FormulaRx.

Hair FormulaRx is not recommended for use in patients younger than 18 years of age.

Please inform your medical provider of all allergies, including allergies to ingredients that may be in the Hair FormulaRx. These may include:

  1. Minoxidil
  2. Finasteride
  3. Spironolactone
  4. Caffeine
  5. Melatonin
  6. Ketoconazole

Scalp irritation may occur as a side effect of this medication. This can include irritation, itching, rashes, or allergic reactions where the formula is applied. Do not use Hair FormulaRx if an allergic reaction to this medication occurs. Signs of an allergic reaction may include rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you develop any side effects from Hair FormulaRx please stop its use and contact your healthcare provider right away.

This treatment was designed to be applied once daily. Do not use more than your medical provider has instructed you to use. Do not swallow and avoid sensitive areas such as lips, and inside your mouth/nose. Avoid getting into your eyes; if this occurs, rinse thoroughly with a large amount of cool water.

Do not use on cuts, scrapes, damaged (broken/chapped/cut/irritated/scraped) skin, recently shaved areas of the skin, or sunburned skin. Doing any of these things may increase the chance of undesirable side effects.

Uncommonly, changes in hair color and/or texture may occur with the use of Hair FormulaRx.

Hair formulas containing minoxidil may cause initial hair shedding in the first 2-6 weeks. Please reach out to your dermatology provider if you are concerned about this risk.

It is important to apply the formula as prescribed. Hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth) may occur on sites outside of the scalp, especially if minoxidil is used inappropriately or if more than the daily recommended amount is used.

It’s possible—although very rare—to see more serious side effects with long-term topical minoxidil use, especially at higher strengths. These side effects include a possibility of absorption of minoxidil from the scalp and a potential risk of systemic effects including salt and water retention, increase or decrease in blood pressure, increase in heart rate, chest pain, and edema/swelling. Use caution if you have a past medical history of heart disease, including hypertension. The use of Aspirin may decrease the effectiveness of topical minoxidil. Please run your ingredients by your in-person provider or cardiologist prior to use if this applies to you.

Do not use topical minoxidil if you are taking the medication cyclosporine.

Hair formulas containing finasteride should not be used by patients who have a past medical history of prostate cancer or undiagnosed urinary or prostate concerns, breast cancer, or liver disease.

Finasteride is contraindicated for use in people with childbearing  potential (those who may become pregnant). Finasteride should not be handled or touched by people who are pregnant or breastfeeding or if there is a chance of becoming pregnant because of the possibility of absorption through the skin and/or scalp and the subsequent potential risk to an unborn fetus. If a pregnant person comes in contact with finasteride, the area of contact should be washed right away with soap and water and a healthcare professional should be notified.

Do not use topical finasteride if you are currently taking oral finasteride also known as Propecia®, Proscar®, or are currently taking other medications in the same drug class including but not limited to dutasteride.

The potential for systemic side effects is reduced for topical finasteride in comparison to oral finasteride. However, research has shown that serum dihydrotestosterone levels decrease while using topical finasteride and that topical finasteride can be systemically absorbed through the skin. For this reason, it is possible that some men—although very rare—may experience similar side effects as oral finasteride.

The following adverse effects have been reported with oral finasteride and it is unknown if similar side effects occur when used topically: sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, male infertility, and ejaculation disorders that may continue after stopping the medication (also known as “post-finasteride syndrome”), breast disorders (including enlargement, tenderness and tumor), depression, suicidal thoughts, myalgia, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Oral finasteride has been shown to affect PSA levels on lab testing and it is unknown if finasteride may affect PSA levels when used topically. Please discuss the use of this topical medication if your formula contains finasteride with your healthcare provider if you are planning on getting a PSA test.

Patients taking oral finasteride should not donate blood until at least 6 months have passed following their last dose. It also is not known whether this restriction applies to patients using finasteride topically. If you are considering donating blood, please speak with your in-person healthcare provider first.

Please tell your dermatology provider:

  1. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant.
  2. If you have any medical condition, including but not limited to liver disease and prostate or undiagnosed urinary concerns.
  3. About all of the medications you are taking including both prescription and non-prescription medications including vitamins.

Please always follow your medical provider's specific directions on how to use your Hair FormulaRx. Using more than the daily recommended amount may increase the risk of side effects and does not improve hair growth. This information does not take the place of talking with your healthcare provider about your treatment.

Please do not allow dogs, cats, or any pets to come in contact with this medication. If this occurs, please consult with a veterinarian.

Keep Hair FormulaRx out of the reach of children.
