Basic skincare routine

  • Wash your face with water or a gentle cleanser.
  • Apply a thin layer of your Curology formula to your face/neck after your skin has dried.
  • Apply moisturizer after your Curology prescription cream, if you need it.*

Does your formula include tretinoin? If so, we generally recommend using a moisturizer once or twice daily. But note that this is optional.

Note that your Curology custom formula is already made with a lightly moisturizing base, so you might not need an additional moisturizer.

You can apply your moisturizer any time of day, including after you wash your face or after you apply sunscreen. You can also use moisturizer a few minutes before or after you apply your Curology formula in the evening; this can be especially helpful if you’re experiencing any dryness or irritation.

How to apply your Curology formula

Wondering how to apply your Curology formula?
  • Apply your custom formula in the evening (Curology works while you sleep)
  • Apply a thin layer of your medication to your face (and neck, if applicable) with your fingertips, and rub in gently. Use just enough to cover the areas you need. Using more than recommended may cause irritation and slow your progress!
If you’re using Curology’s dark spot formula, follow these tips instead:
  • Apply your dark spot formula twice a day—morning and night
  • Use your fingertips or a cotton swab to apply formula only to the affected areas. In general, fingertips are best for clusters of dark spots or larger patches of hyperpigmentation, while cotton swabs work well if you have just a few small dark spots.
  • Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 whenever you go outside. Dark spots get worse the more they’re exposed to the sun, and even a little bit of sun exposure can cancel out the effects of your dark spot formula.

Most Curology formulas should be used every night (and morning, if you have the dark spot formula). Follow your Curology provider’s instructions to help minimize any potential irritation. If you do experience irritation, you can check out our tips here or reach out to your medical provider—they’ll be happy to help!

How to apply your cleanser and moisturizer

Applying your cleanser

Massage the cleanser onto your damp skin. Rinse off thoroughly with warm water, then pat your skin dry.

When cleansing at night, don't forget to give your skin a few minutes to dry completely before applying your custom formula.

Applying your moisturizer

In the morning, apply the moisturizer after washing your face with the cleanser and patting your skin dry. The moisturizer absorbs best into freshly-washed skin that’s damp but not wet—kind of like a sponge, damp skin is more absorbent. Since the moisturizer shouldn’t clog pores, use however much you want! Apply a thin layer if that feels good, or apply multiple layers if you want extra hydration. Allow the moisturizer to dry, then finish off with your favorite sunscreen.

At night, you can apply the moisturizer after your Curology custom formula, if you need it. Note that your Curology formula is already made with a lightly moisturizing base, so you might not need an additional moisturizer.

How to use your emergency spot patch

Using your emergency spot patch
  • Wash your face, then apply the patch to the problem spot on clean, dry skin.
  • If it’s nighttime, apply your custom cream followed by your moisturizer (if you need it), avoiding the spot patch. If you’re wearing it during the day, just skip the custom cream!
  • A clean dry face helps the spot patches stick to your skin better. The spot patch may not stick as well to oily skin.
  • Wait 6-24 hours and then peel off. Repeat daily as needed!

How to use your acne body wash

Using the acne body wash
  • Massage onto damp skin. Leave it on for a minute, then rinse off.
  • It’s gentle, can be used daily, and can be used all over the body - just remember to avoid the genital area.
  • If you find it to be a bit drying, consider using it in just the affected areas.
